Grasse, north of Cannes in the Maritime Alps, is internationally known as the perfume capital and home to the Musée International de la Parfumerie. The project proposes an extension to the museum that combines exhibition and research spaces while integrating indoor and outdoor areas into the historic hillside context. Embedded into the hill, it extends the main passage axis and forms an accessible roof plaza so that the building becomes part of the urban fabric rather than an isolated object.
The museum is organized around a monolithic, longitudinal natural stone core that defines both the entrance and the public plaza above. Subtractive interventions within this core accommodate the entrance, café, and emergency staircases, while perforations create connections across the plaza throughout its monumental form. Its continuous presence on all floors creates a clear spatial reference that guides visitors through the building. Orthogonal concrete walls branch off from the core to form a sequence of exhibition spaces with varying degrees of openness. Additional spatial depth is achieved through opening selective floor and ceiling elements creating visual connections to other floors.
Beyond its spatial role, the core integrates vertical scent ducts that form part of the exhibition. Developed in the research facility on the lowest level, these fragrances accompany visitors throughout the museum, establishing a direct connection between scent production and exhibition. This proximity creates a symbiosis between researchers and visitors, linking scientific experimentation with sensory experience and direct feedback.
